This week on No Restraints with Rudy Caseres my guest is Julie Kliegman. Julie writes on (among other topics) how mental illness is portrayed in the media. Her work has been featured on The Ringer, Vox,The Verge, Vulture, and many other sites. I first connected with Julie when she was looking for someone to interview for a piece for Washington Monthly on the federal government’s spending on mental health anti-stigma campaigns. Since then we’ve kept in touch and I’ve helped connect her with other advocates and give voice to people with lived experience that are often not portrayed in the best light in the media. Today we discussed how she got into journalism, her stint writing in Spanish for a Puerto Rican publication, how mental health is treated in college sports, examining various shows and the accuracy (or lack thereof) of their portrayals including Mr. Robot, Empire, Homeland, and BoJack Horseman. One of my favorite moments, however, is when I got to quiz Julie on a piece she had written for Mental Floss about the Nickelodean children’s show Rugrats. Even with the tech issues we experienced today I’m incredibly glad to have had this talk with Julie and I hope you’ll show your support. You can learn more about her and find links to all her work at JulieKliegman.com. You can also follow her on Twitter @jmkliegman.

Thanks for watching! My hope is that I’ll see you again next Friday for a brand new episode of No Restraints with Rudy Caseres.

Because it’s for your own good.
