This week on No Restraints with Rudy Caseres my guest is Charlotte Kaufman. Charlotte Kaufman is the founder of Women Who Sail, the largest online group of women and gender nonconforming sailors in the world. She and her husband bought a sailboat together and decided to raise their children while circumnavigating the globe. In 2014 they set sail from Mexico to the South Pacific aboard their boat, Rebel Heart. A cascading series of events led to their calling for help and the ensuing rescue at sea caused an international media firestorm about sailing & parenting. Her memoir on the story is forthcoming. In the meantime you can listen to her story on the world famous public radio program This American Life here.

Charlotte lives with Bipolar Disorder and writes about mental health, Bipolar Disorder, Postpartum Depression, childhood sexual abuse, parenting, and adventuring. Her work has appeared in HuffPost, Sammiches & Psych Meds, San Diego Magazine, and on her blog, www.charlottekaufman.com.

NOTE: We had some audio distortion issues on my end while live-streaming but, thankfully, Charlotte was willing to add captions to the entire show for the benefit of all.

    ABOUT RUDY

My name is Rudy Caseres and I am an award-winning public speaker, live-streaming, social media influencer/manager, and storytelling event producer. I am the host of No Restraints with Rudy Caseres where I have live interactive candid discussions with the leading advocates in mental health, human rights, and suicide prevention (currently on hiatus). I also host a monthly panel discussion for The Mighty with the leading mental health advocates in the world. I previously hosted SPSM Chat - Suicide Prevention Social Media where I led lively discussions with various experts in the field of suicidology. I advocate for humane treatment in the mental healthcare system and effective suicide prevention. I have given over 100 presentations in which I have shared my story of living with bipolar, surviving a mental breakdown while serving in the US Army, and fighting against forced psychiatric treatment in front of grad students, doctors, psych ward patients, educators, and youth at junior highs, high schools, and juvenile detention facilities. I have spoken across the country from the California State Capitol at an event headlined by legendary actor Richard Dreyfus to the Shedding Light on Mental Health Conference in Greater Wheeling, West Virginia. My content has been featured in The Mighty, This is My Brave, HealthyPlace, The S Word, OC87 Recovery Diaries, Sweatpants & Coffee, Stigma Fighters, and Schizophrenic NYC. In 2017, I was awarded the NAMI California Outstanding Peer of the Year and I was named one of The Mighty's Mental Health Heroes of 2017. After living in Los Angeles, California most of my life I recently relocated to the Denver, Colorado area.
